ADVANCED MOUNTED LAW ENFORCEMENT AND CIVILIAN POSSE COURSE

Course Description

 

This course is intended for both sworn and non-sworn members of a law enforcement agency's mounted  unit or posse who have completed Basic Mounted Police or Posse training conducted by their agency or a recognized mounted law enforcement training program, AND who desire to advance their professional development by taking their mounted police and civilian posse training to an advanced level.

 

Curriculum

 

The 20+ hour curriculum consists of classroom instruction, as well as practical training both on and off horseback.  Unlike the Basic and Intermediate classes, this course places more focus on fine-tuning your equitation skills so that you can get the most desirable responses from your horse when it matters the most, such as during:

 

  • High-Stress Situations

  • Negotiating Obstacles

  • Approaches to Vehicles and Suspects

  • Traffic Stops

  • Simulated Gunfire & Taser Deployments

  • Emergency Dismounts

  • Self Defense on Horseback

  • Pursuits

  • Apprehensions

  • Arrest Procedures

  • Handcuffing

  • Searches of Persons

  • Escorts of Persons and Vehicles

  • Tactical Formations

  • Crowd Management

  • Presentations

  • Directing Traffic

  • Preparing Citations and Reports While Mounted

 

Upon successful completion of the course the student will have advanced knowledge and skills to achieve the most desirable response from his or her horse while competently and effectively performing some of the more demanding tasks of mounted law enforcement for both the horse and rider.   

 

Instructors who are selected to teach the riding portions of the class are considered masters at equitation.  Our courses are insured and all instruction is supervised by graduates of the University of Louisville - Southern Police Institute's Mounted Law Enforcement Instructor Course.

 

Who Should Attend


This course is designed for both sworn and non-sworn members of a law enforcement agency's mounted unit or posse who have completed Basic Mounted Police or Posse training conducted by their agency or a recognized mounted law enforcement training program, AND who desire to advance their professional development by taking their mounted police and civilian posse training to an advanced level.

Unlike the Basic and Intermediate classes, participants should have a superior knowledge of horsemanship fundamentals and posses intermediate to advanced riding skills. The ability to apply the proper aids to:

  • Walk, trot and canter from point to point without veering off course;

  • Stop, Back and Turn the horse;

  • Backing through various configurations;

  • Negotiate a serpentine without knocking over cones;

  • Perform the Haunches-In and Haunches-Out maneuvers;

  • Perform the Leg-Yield;

  • Perform the Side-Pass; and

  • Turn on the Haunches and Forehand.

The course is considered by some to be physically challenging.  Participant should be in good health and without any physical or medical condition that could be worsened by the activities of the class, or that might otherwise create a risk to the participant or others.

Due to numerous requests from agencies for us to offer this course at their respective locations, Suncoast Equine no longer conducts this course at its facility in Webster, Florida, however, we are happy to bring this course to you.
